Imagine you’re a talented designer with a portfolio you’re proud of, a brand that perfectly captures your style, and a deep commitment to delivering amazing results for your clients. But, despite all that, your calendar still has way more open slots than it should. Sound familiar?

You’re not alone. So many designers hit this frustrating point—doing great work, but still struggling to get clients to say “yes.” That’s exactly why I want to share a few strategies that are helping other designers shift from “barely getting by” to being fully booked.

What’s Changed?

First, let’s get real about why your current approach might not be working. A lot of us were told that the key to getting clients was to post consistently on one platform—Instagram, Facebook, you name it—and wait for leads to roll in. That may have worked years ago, but these days, the client journey is so much more complicated.

Clients don’t just wake up one day and hire a designer. They spend weeks, even months, gathering inspiration on Pinterest, checking out designers on Google, comparing portfolios, asking for recommendations, and deciding whether it’s even the right time to start their project. This messy, back-and-forth process is what makes it so hard to grab their attention. And if you’re not showing up consistently and offering valuable insights at every step, they’ll move on to someone who is.

Simplify With a Monthly Theme

One of the easiest ways to keep your audience engaged is to center your marketing around a monthly theme. For instance, if you decide that this month is all about kitchen renovations, everything you share—your blog posts, Instagram updates, email newsletters—can focus on that one topic. One week you might talk about layout options, the next week you highlight cabinetry styles, and then wrap up with countertop trends.

This approach helps you cut through the noise. By sticking to a single theme, you become the go-to resource on that topic, making it easier for clients to see your expertise. Plus, it saves you a ton of time and stress since you’re not scrambling to come up with content ideas last-minute.

Create Lead Magnets That Speak to Your Clients

Another must-have is a great lead magnet. If you don’t have one yet, now’s the time to create something that genuinely helps your potential clients. Think of it as a free gift—like a downloadable guide or checklist—in exchange for their email address.

For example, if you’re focusing on kitchens, why not offer a guide like “Luxury Kitchen Must-Haves” or “5 Budget-Friendly Upgrades for a Dream Kitchen”? It’s a simple way to provide value while also building your email list. Plus, it positions you as a helpful expert—not just a pretty Instagram account they scroll past.

Stay Connected With Newsletters

Once someone’s on your email list, keep the conversation going. Regular newsletters don’t have to feel like a chore. Think of them as a personal note to your audience—sharing helpful tips, recent projects, and behind-the-scenes moments. Even just once or twice a month can make a difference.

Newsletters are a fantastic way to remind people who you are and how you can help. By staying in their inbox, you’re more likely to be top-of-mind when they’re ready to hire. And remember: it’s not about bombarding them—it’s about sharing genuine, valuable content that makes their life easier.

Let Automation Lighten the Load

You’re busy—I get it. That’s why automation is your new best friend. By using tools to schedule your content in advance, you can set up weeks’ worth of social media posts, email campaigns, and blog updates in one go. Then, it runs in the background while you focus on your design projects.

If you’re showcasing your kitchen renovation theme, you could schedule a series of Instagram posts, Facebook updates, and a couple of blog articles—all reinforcing that same message. It’s a small investment of time up front that saves you so much energy later on.

Show Your Personality

Last but definitely not least, don’t shy away from showing the real you. People don’t just hire portfolios—they hire people. Share a behind-the-scenes look at your process. Post a quick video of your favorite kitchen makeover tips. Show them a bit of your world—like that weekend pancake recipe you love. The more relatable you are, the easier it is for potential clients to feel connected to you. And that connection often turns into trust—and eventually, a booking.

A Simple Plan That Works

These strategies—monthly themes, lead magnets, newsletters, automation, and adding that personal touch—form the foundation of a modern, effective approach. No more waiting around for clients to stumble across you. By showing up consistently, offering real value, and making those personal connections, you’ll be the designer who stands out, earns trust, and fills your calendar.
